Daivāsura Sampad Vibhāga Yoga
The Yoga of the Division between the Divine and Demoniac Natures
The Supreme Lord said: Fearlessness, purity of mind, steadfastness in the yoga of knowledge, charity, self-control, sacrifice, study of scriptures, austerity, and straightforwardness -
Non-violence, truthfulness, freedom from anger, renunciation, peacefulness, absence of fault-finding, compassion toward all beings, freedom from covetousness, gentleness, modesty, and absence of fickleness -
Vigor, forgiveness, fortitude, purity, absence of malice, and absence of excessive pride - these belong to one born with the divine nature, O Bharata.
Hypocrisy, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness, and ignorance - these belong to one born with the demoniac nature, O Partha.
The divine nature leads to liberation, and the demoniac nature leads to bondage. Do not grieve, O Pandava, for you are born with the divine nature.
There are two types of created beings in this world - the divine and the demoniac. The divine has been described at length; now hear from Me about the demoniac, O Partha.
The demoniac do not know what to do and what to refrain from. Neither purity, nor right conduct, nor truth is found in them.
They say the world is unreal, without foundation, without a God, not produced by mutual causation - what else is it but caused by desire alone?
Holding this view, these lost souls of small intellect and cruel deeds arise as enemies of the world, bent on its destruction.
Taking refuge in insatiable desire, filled with hypocrisy, pride, and arrogance, holding false views through delusion, they act with impure resolves.
Beset with immeasurable anxiety that ends only with death, regarding the gratification of desires as the highest goal, and convinced that this is all there is -
Bound by hundreds of bonds of desire, devoted to lust and anger, they strive to accumulate wealth by unjust means for the gratification of their desires.
This has been gained by me today; this desire I shall fulfill; this wealth is mine, and that also shall be mine in the future -
That enemy has been slain by me, and I shall slay others too. I am the lord, I am the enjoyer, I am perfect, powerful, and happy.
I am wealthy and of noble birth. Who else is equal to me? I shall perform sacrifices, I shall give charity, I shall rejoice - thus deluded by ignorance.
Bewildered by many thoughts, entangled in the net of delusion, addicted to the gratification of desires, they fall into a foul hell.
Self-conceited, obstinate, intoxicated by wealth and pride, they perform sacrifices in name only, with hypocrisy and without following proper scriptural injunctions.
Given over to egoism, power, arrogance, desire, and anger, these malicious people hate Me dwelling in their own bodies and in the bodies of others.
These hateful, cruel, and vile people - the lowest of mankind - I repeatedly cast into demoniac wombs in the cycle of birth and death.
Attaining demoniac births again and again, these deluded souls, without ever reaching Me, O son of Kunti, sink to the lowest state.
There are three gates to hell that lead to the destruction of the self - lust, anger, and greed. Therefore, one should abandon these three.
A person who is freed from these three gates of darkness, O son of Kunti, practices what is good for the self and thus attains the supreme destination.
One who discards scriptural injunctions and acts according to one's own desires attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme destination.
Therefore, let scripture be your authority in determining what should be done and what should not be done. Having known what is declared by scriptural injunctions, you should act in this world accordingly.
