← Chapter 2: The Yoga of Knowledge

Verse 2.66

Speaker: Krishna

Sanskrit

नास्ति बुद्धिरयुक्तस्य न चायुक्तस्य भावना। न चाभावयतः शान्तिरशान्तस्य कुतः सुखम्॥

Transliteration (IAST)

nāsti buddhir ayuktasya na cāyuktasya bhāvanā na cābhāvayataḥ śāntir aśāntasya kutaḥ sukham

Word-by-Word Meanings

buddhiḥ-wisdom/understanding
ayuktasya-of the undisciplined
bhāvanā-contemplation/feeling
śāntiḥ-peace
sukham-happiness

Translation

There is no wisdom for the undisciplined, nor is there meditation for the undisciplined. For one without meditation there is no peace, and without peace, how can there be happiness?

Commentary

Krishna presents a chain of positive dependencies: discipline → wisdom → meditation → peace → happiness. Without the foundation of self-discipline, the entire spiritual edifice cannot stand. This verse is a sobering reminder that spiritual attainment requires sustained effort and cannot be achieved through mere intellectual understanding.
