← Chapter 12: The Yoga of Devotion

Verse 12.8

Speaker: Krishna

Sanskrit

मय्येव मन आधत्स्व मयि बुद्धिं निवेशय | निवसिष्यसि मय्येव अत ऊर्ध्वं न संशयः ||८||

Transliteration (IAST)

mayy eva mana ādhatsva mayi buddhiṁ niveśaya | nivasiṣyasi mayy eva ata ūrdhvaṁ na saṁśayaḥ ||8||

Word-by-Word Meanings

mayi-in Me
eva-alone
manaḥ-mind
ādhatsva-fix
buddhim-intellect
niveśaya-place
nivasiṣyasi-you shall dwell
na saṁśayaḥ-there is no doubt

Translation

Fix your mind on Me alone, let your intellect dwell in Me. You shall thereafter live in Me alone; there is no doubt about this.

Commentary

This is the highest instruction - direct, unmediated absorption in God through both mind (manas) and intellect (buddhi). Shankaracharya explains that fixing the mind refers to emotional devotion while placing the intellect refers to discriminative understanding. The promise 'nivasiṣyasi mayi' (you shall dwell in Me) indicates complete union.
