Word-by-Word Meanings

na-not
śakyase-you are able
draṣṭum-to see
sva-cakṣuṣā-with your own eyes
divyam-divine
dadāmi-I give
cakṣuḥ-eye/vision
yogam aiśvaram-divine sovereign yoga

Translation

But you cannot see Me with your own eyes. I give you divine vision - behold My sovereign yoga.

Commentary

Krishna grants Arjuna 'divya-cakṣuḥ' - divine eyes - because the cosmic form transcends ordinary sensory perception. Shankaracharya explains that this divine sight is a special grace (anugraha) bestowed by the Lord, not achievable through human effort alone. This establishes that theophany requires divine enablement.
