Word-by-Word Meanings

anukampā-artham-out of compassion
ajñāna-jam-born of ignorance
tamaḥ-darkness
nāśayāmi-I destroy
ātma-bhāva-sthaḥ-dwelling within their hearts
jñāna-dīpena-with the lamp of knowledge

Translation

Out of compassion for them, I, dwelling within their hearts, destroy the darkness born of ignorance with the shining lamp of knowledge.

Commentary

Krishna as the inner guide (antaryāmin) actively dispels ignorance through the light of knowledge. The metaphor of the 'jñāna-dīpa' (lamp of knowledge) is powerful - darkness does not need to be fought, only illuminated. This verse affirms that divine grace operates from within the devotee's own heart.
