Verse 7.13

Speaker: Krishna

Sanskrit

त्रिभिर्गुणमयैर्भावैरेभिः सर्वमिदं जगत् | मोहितं नाभिजानाति मामेभ्यः परमव्ययम् ||१३||

Transliteration (IAST)

tribhirguṇamayairbhāvairebhiḥ sarvamidaṁ jagat | mohitaṁ nābhijānāti māmebhyaḥ paramavyayam ||13||

Word-by-Word Meanings

त्रिभिः-by three
गुणमयैः-consisting of gunas
भावैः-states
मोहितम्-deluded
जगत्-world
परम्-supreme
अव्ययम्-imperishable

Translation

Deluded by these three states composed of the gunas, this entire world does not recognize Me, who am above them and imperishable.

Commentary

The three gunas create a veil of delusion (moha) that prevents beings from perceiving the transcendent Divine. This sets up the discussion of maya in the next verse. Ramanuja explains that attachment to guna-born pleasures keeps the jiva turned away from God.
