← Chapter 6: The Yoga of Meditation

Verse 6.2

Speaker: Krishna

Sanskrit

यं संन्यासमिति प्राहुर्योगं तं विद्धि पाण्डव। न ह्यसंन्यस्तसङ्कल्पो योगी भवति कश्चन॥

Transliteration (IAST)

yaṁ sannyāsam iti prāhur yogaṁ taṁ viddhi pāṇḍava na hy asannyasta-saṅkalpo yogī bhavati kaścana

Word-by-Word Meanings

sannyāsam-renunciation
yogam-yoga
viddhi-know
asannyasta-without renouncing
saṅkalpaḥ-desire for self-gratification

Translation

What is called renunciation, know that to be yoga, O Pandava. For no one becomes a yogi without renouncing the desire for sense gratification.

Commentary

Krishna equates sannyasa and yoga, showing they are not opposing paths but the same discipline viewed from different angles. The key renunciation is of sankalpa - selfish desire and mental scheming - not of action itself.
