← Chapter 5: The Yoga of Renunciation of Action

Verse 5.4

Speaker: Krishna

Sanskrit

साङ्ख्ययोगौ पृथग्बालाः प्रवदन्ति न पण्डिताः। एकमप्यास्थितः सम्यगुभयोर्विन्दते फलम्।।

Transliteration (IAST)

sāṅkhya-yogau pṛthag bālāḥ pravadanti na paṇḍitāḥ। ekam apy āsthitaḥ samyag ubhayor vindate phalam।।

Word-by-Word Meanings

साङ्ख्ययोगौ-Sankhya and Yoga
पृथक्-different
बालाः-the ignorant
पण्डिताः-the wise
एकम्-one
फलम्-fruit/result

Translation

Only the ignorant speak of Sankhya (knowledge) and Yoga (action) as different; not the wise. One who is properly established in even one of them obtains the fruit of both.

Commentary

Krishna emphasizes the unity of jñāna and karma yoga. The distinction between the path of knowledge and the path of action is superficial - both lead to the same realization. A mature practitioner understands that true knowledge naturally expresses itself in selfless action.
