← Chapter 3: The Yoga of Action

Verse 3.28

Speaker: Krishna

Sanskrit

तत्त्ववित्तु महाबाहो गुणकर्मविभागयोः। गुणा गुणेषु वर्तन्त इति मत्वा न सज्जते।।

Transliteration (IAST)

tattva-vit tu mahā-bāho guṇa-karma-vibhāgayoḥ | guṇā guṇeṣu vartanta iti matvā na sajjate ||

Word-by-Word Meanings

तत्त्ववित्-knower of truth
गुणकर्मविभागयोः-of the divisions of gunas and actions
गुणाः-the gunas
गुणेषु-among the gunas
वर्तन्ते-operate
न सज्जते-does not become attached

Translation

But one who knows the truth about the divisions of the gunas and their actions, O mighty-armed, understanding that it is the gunas acting upon the gunas, does not become attached.

Commentary

The enlightened person sees that all interaction is between the gunas of nature - senses (gunas) engaging with sense objects (gunas). The Self is merely the witness. This understanding dissolves attachment because one recognizes that the true Self is not involved in any action.
