Speaker: Arjuna
Sanskrit
न चैतद्विद्मः कतरन्नो गरीयो यद्वा जयेम यदि वा नो जयेयुः। यानेव हत्वा न जिजीविषामस् तेऽवस्थिताः प्रमुखे धार्तराष्ट्राः॥
Transliteration (IAST)
na caitad vidmaḥ kataran no garīyo yad vā jayema yadi vā no jayeyuḥ yān eva hatvā na jijīviṣāmas te 'vasthitāḥ pramukhe dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ
Word-by-Word Meanings
garīyaḥ-better/weightier
jayema-we should conquer
jijīviṣāmaḥ-we wish to live
dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ-sons of Dhritarashtra
pramukhe-before us
Translation
We do not know which is better for us - to conquer them or to be conquered by them. The sons of Dhritarashtra, whom if we killed we would not wish to live, stand before us.
Commentary
Arjuna's confusion reaches its peak - he cannot determine what is right. This state of moral paralysis necessitates divine guidance. The inability to discern right action through reason alone points to the need for transcendent wisdom.
