Verse 2.27

Speaker: Krishna

Sanskrit

जातस्य हि ध्रुवो मृत्युर्ध्रुवं जन्म मृतस्य च। तस्मादपरिहार्येऽर्थे न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि॥

Transliteration (IAST)

jātasya hi dhruvo mṛtyur dhruvaṁ janma mṛtasya ca tasmād aparihārye 'rthe na tvaṁ śocitum arhasi

Word-by-Word Meanings

jātasya-of one who is born
dhruvaḥ-certain
mṛtyuḥ-death
janma-birth
aparihārye-unavoidable

Translation

For one who is born, death is certain; and for one who has died, birth is certain. Therefore, you should not grieve over what is unavoidable.

Commentary

This verse presents the logical argument from inevitability. Birth and death are natural cycles that cannot be prevented. Grieving over the inevitable is irrational. This pragmatic argument complements the metaphysical arguments of the preceding verses.
