उत्क्रामन्तं स्थितं वापि भुञ्जानं वा गुणान्वितम् | विमूढा नानुपश्यन्ति पश्यन्ति ज्ञानचक्षुषः ||१०||

utkrāmantaṁ sthitaṁ vāpi bhuñjānaṁ vā guṇānvitam | vimūḍhā nānupaśyanti paśyanti jñāna-cakṣuṣaḥ ||10||
Word-by-Word Meanings
Translation
The deluded do not perceive the soul departing from or dwelling in the body, or enjoying sense objects in association with the gunas. But those with the eye of knowledge see it.
Commentary
Shankaracharya contrasts the ignorant (vimūḍha) who cannot perceive the self's true nature with the wise (jñāna-cakṣuṣaḥ) who see the self as distinct from the body and its activities. The 'eye of knowledge' is the discriminative insight cultivated through Vedantic inquiry. Madhva notes that even the self's departure at death - a dramatic event - goes unnoticed by those lacking spiritual vision.
