← Chapter 3: The Yoga of Action

Verse 3.15

Speaker: Krishna

Sanskrit

कर्म ब्रह्मोद्भवं विद्धि ब्रह्माक्षरसमुद्भवम्। तस्मात्सर्वगतं ब्रह्म नित्यं यज्ञे प्रतिष्ठितम्।।

Transliteration (IAST)

karma brahmodbhavaṁ viddhi brahmākṣara-samudbhavam | tasmāt sarva-gataṁ brahma nityaṁ yajñe pratiṣṭhitam ||

Word-by-Word Meanings

कर्म-action
ब्रह्मोद्भवम्-born of the Vedas
अक्षर-the imperishable
सर्वगतम्-all-pervading
ब्रह्म-the Absolute
यज्ञे-in sacrifice

Translation

Know that prescribed action originates from the Vedas, and the Vedas arise from the Imperishable. Therefore, the all-pervading Brahman is eternally established in sacrifice.

Commentary

This verse completes the cosmic cycle by tracing action back to its divine source. Prescribed duties come from the Vedas, which emanate from the eternal Brahman. Thus sacrifice is not merely ritual but the very principle by which the Absolute sustains creation.
